Richard Brun (1908-1980) - Richard Brun (1908-1980). FEMALE MUSICIANS 1960s Oil on canvas, 75.5×65 cm. Signed lower right ”R. Brun”. Unframed. A figurative composition represents a typical example of his painterly style, in which an expressive stylisation of the figure is combined with an emphasis on colour and linear dynamics. The motif of two female musicians, complemented by a third, vertically conceived figure in the background, creates a closed, rhythmically balanced whole, whose structure is based on curves and the mutual interweaving of colour planes. The figures are reduced to basic volumes and silhouettes, whose modelling is guided more by painterly than anatomical considerations. Muted, occasionally brightened colour tones in combination with layered, structurally rich painting lend the picture an atmosphere of concentration and inner harmony. Brun`s oeuvre derives from the tradition of modern figurative painting of the second half of the 20th century, influenced by both expressive deformation and the aspiration toward a lyrical, intimate statement. The presented work is a characteristic example of the artist`s interest in musical and feminine motifs, in which a decorative effect is combined with a cultivated painterly shorthand. Condition B.
