FIGURAL TABLE CLOCK, SCHAUKEL-AUTOMAT - Austria, Vienna ca 1760–1780 A representative table clock in a wooden case with glazed doors, fitted with an arched brass dial with Roman numerals and a minute track, complemented by pierced steel hands. The dial plate is richly decorated with cast relief appliques featuring allegorical figures and ornamental décor in the Late Baroque to Rococo style. In the upper part of the arch, a figural automaton – Cupid with a crossbow – is mechanically linked to the movement. In the lower part, an opening for a pendulum regulator with a child figure on a swing (Schaukelkind), performing the characteristic swinging motion back and forth (so-called Schaukel-Automat). The motion of both elements creates a scenic, theatrical effect typical of representative Viennese clocks of the second half of the 18th century. Spring-driven movement between plates, rear access through glazed doors, hourly and quarter-hour strike on two bells. Date indicator on the dial.
