Bidspirit auction | Japanese Satsuma Style Polychrome Earthenware
Japanese Satsuma Style Polychrome Earthenware Garden Stool - A large barrel-form garden stool crafted from earthenware and decorated in the Satsuma style, likely produced for the export market. The exterior features a continuous narrative scene depicting figures in traditional Japanese attire, including women in kimonos and figures on horseback, set within a landscape of pine trees, architectural elements, and flowering flora. The decoration is rendered in vibrant polychrome enamels with significant raised gold moriage highlighting. The upper and lower registers are bordered by bands of stylized floral and geometric patterns, accented by two rows of raised, gilded ceramic bosses that simulate the appearance of a traditional drum. The top surface and sides include pierced double coin motifs, which serve as both decorative elements and functional handles. The entire piece is finished with a characteristic cream-colored crackle glaze. No maker marks are visible on the exterior or top surface. Height: Approximately 14 to 16 inches.
