Artur Gonçalves - Carlos Reis - Artur Gonçalves, 1942. Published in 1942 in Torres Novas, authored by Artur Gonçalves and Gustavo de Bivar Pinto Lopes, this is an important and meticulously crafted artistic monograph dedicated to the life and work of the celebrated Portuguese naturalist painter Carlos Reis (1863-1940), a leading figure in painting of his time and a member of the iconic ”Grupo do Leão” (Lion Group). The publication contains a detailed chronological biography of the master, 48 pages of text, and a remarkable suite of 37 black and white prints in separate sections, reproducing his most iconic paintings and portraits, such as ”My Daughter Maria Luisa” (1913) and ”Portrait of D. Adelaide Lima Cruz” (1908). The copy is presented in its original paperback format, with the front cover decorated with a beautiful and expressive charcoal portrait of the painter himself, drawn in 1931. Some natural oxidation and marginal acid stains typical of the paper of that period are noticeable on the paperback cover, while the text block and prints are in very good overall condition.
