Damiam de Goes - Chronica do Principe Dom Joam, nova Edição - Damiam de Goes, 1905. Published in 1905 in Coimbra by the University Press, this is the carefully crafted and esteemed ”New Edition” of the celebrated chronicle by Damião de Góis, which meticulously narrates the historical, military, and nautical exploits of Prince Dom João (future King D. João II of Portugal). This publication, which constitutes Volume I of the renowned ”Literary Jewels” collection, was entirely prepared and annotated by the esteemed professor of the University of Coimbra, Dr. A. J. Gonçalves Guimarães. The edition is enriched with a beautiful facsimile reproduction of the original frontispiece of the extremely rare first edition of 1567 (with the coat of arms of Portugal flanked by heraldic cherubs). The copy is presented in its original, fully paperbacked format, exceptionally and unusually preserving its paper spine with intact printed inscriptions and soft covers decorated with classic vignettes from the collection. The text block and pages are in very good condition, very clean and with the original generous margins yet to be trimmed, with only the natural and slight marginal yellowing of the paper due to age. An indispensable piece for collectors of Portuguese historiography.
