Julio Diniz - Pupilas do senhor Reitor - Julio Diniz. Published in 1869 in Porto by Typographia do Jornal do Porto (31—Rua Ferreira Borges—31), this celebrated and influential work of Portuguese literature, by Júlio Diniz, is presented in its scarce 3rd Edition. The copy, in large octavo format and with 276 pages, stands out for its excellent cover. It features a period brown half-leather binding with corners and planes in marbled paper of red and dark tones, with the spine featuring open bands, delicate tooling and gilded floral rosettes, as well as black leather labels with the author's name and title engraved in gold. The binding is in very solid condition, and the text block remains firm and perfectly legible, exhibiting only the natural and slight acidity and oxidation stains typical of period paper, which in no way affect the value of the piece. The work still retains an unusual inner paperback cover printed on salmon-colored paper. It is a fundamental classic of rural realism and the 19th-century Portuguese novel, highly collectible in this old Porto edition.
