Thomas Corneille tradução - Oeuvres d'Ovide: Traduittes en Vers Français - Thomas Corneille tradução, 1810. Published in 1810 in Paris by the prestigious publishing house Caille et Ravier, libraires, with the physical printing of the text block handled by Imprimerie de Chaigneau, this volume corresponds to Tome Premier (Volume I) of a celebrated edition of Ovid's works, presented in a format of approximately 13 cm (12 or 18 inch) with a total of 221 pages. The book brings together an important division of poetic translation into French verse: the Epistles and Elegies appear in their entirety translated by the celebrated playwright Thomas Corneille (1625–1709), while the sections on The Art of Love and The Remedy of Love appear signed under a pseudonym (”par ***”), reflecting the moral adaptations of the early 19th century. The copy is bound in an elegant full leather binding of the period with a spine richly decorated with gilded floral motifs in the squares, exhibiting a very good state of overall preservation, with a perfectly firm structure and clean text block bearing the subtle patina of time. The piece is valued for bearing on the verso of the cover the engraved armorial bookplate belonging to the distinguished J. G. Mazziotti Salema Garção Bookstore, and, according to historical notes, is a collector's item. The book is noted as having been acquired at the Soares e Mendonça Auction 41 (Porto) dated November 1981.
