Indonesian Painted Hide Leather and Bakelite Wayang Puppets (3) - Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Java, ca. early to mid-20th century. An interesting trio of articulating Wayang kulit puppets made from leather panels and attached to Bakelite rods on large felt covered base. The puppets have articulated arms that the puppeteer controls with the sticks.. The leather is likely water buffalo cutout to create patterns across the body and skirts, as well as facial expressions. The leather is painted gold, blue, orange, red, yellow, green, and black. Middle panel scene depicts demonic faces, snake, dragons, tiger and bulls surrounding palace doors. Puppets measuring approx. 16” to 17.25” tall, base 24” long by 6” deep by 2.25” tall. In good age appropriate condition, with some water stain to felt on base, see photos.
