A renowned scholar of Babylonia and Jerusalem and a great posek. He is celebrated for his series of books Kaf HaChaim, wherein he arranged and compiled rulings of laws and customs in the order of the Shulchan Aruch. He was a great mekubal and studied kabbala together with his companion Rabbi Yehuda Petaya and the Rav HaSadeh. In his book Kaf HaChaim, he integrates many customs which are according to the kabbala.
