The Abudraham of the Holy Gaon Rebbi Avraham of Chechnov Zt''l. Sefer Abudraham, authored by Rabbeinu David Abudraham. Prague, 1784. Printed with the approbation of the Noda BiYehuda. On the title page appears the well-known stamp of the holy Rebbi Avraham of Chechnov Zt''l, ”Avraham ben Raphael Z''l.” The holy Gaon Rebbi Avraham of Ciechanów (1784–1875) was among the elder renowned leaders of Poland in his generation. In 1820 he was appointed rabbi of Ciechanów, serving for 55 years until his passing. In the revealed Torah he studied under the Maharal Tzuntz, and in Chassidut under Rebbi Fishel of Strikov and Rebbi Bunim of Peshischa. Rabbi Akiva Eiger testified about him that he was “a lion among lions, ” and out of great respect would rise to his feet whenever his name was mentioned (as reported by Rabbi Moshe of Kutna, Av Beit Din of Łódź, one of the foremost disciples of Rabbi Akiva Eiger). The holy Divrei Chaim of Sanz said of him that he knew the Torah as it was given at Sinai (as reported by the Tchebiner Rav). The Kotzker Rebbe said of him that he had the appearance of “an angel of God.” His friend, the Chiddushei HaRim of Ger, after ruling on a matter of Agunot, wrote: “I do not wish to rely on myself alone, and I asked greatly to consult with the honored gaon, the righteous rabbi of Ciechanów. And even though I heard he does not wish to write responsa, it is sufficient that he agrees with me orally.” The holy Avnei Nezer wrote in his approbation to the sefer Zechuta d’Avraham authored by Rebbi Avraham of Ciechanów:“The words of the man of God, the holy gaon of Ciechanów, need no approbation from anyone.” He was sought after by the great tzaddikim of Poland, among them the Guter Yid of Gostynin. From his son, Rebbi Dov Berish of Biala, descended the dynasties of Strikov and Aleksander. Condition : Overall in very fine condition, repairs to last few pages.
