Leonid Dmitrievich Shchemelev (1923-2021) was a Belarusian artist, People's Artist of the BSSR (1983), Honored Artist of the BSSR, winner of the State Prize of the BSSR (1982).
He was born on February 5, 1923 in Vitebsk. He worked in various genres of easel painting. His works are distinguished by a free plastic manner of execution using flashy color and chiaroscuro dynamic effects, lack of details, expressiveness. Shchemelev's work reflects the theme of the heroism of the people in the Great Patriotic War (paintings "Difficult Years", "My Birth", "Field Tribunal", "General Dovator", "The First Day of Peace"). He also painted paintings dedicated to historical figures, cultural figures and artists ("Kastus Kalinovsky", "Repin in Zdravnevo", "Lesya Ukrainka"). Shchemelev's works are kept in the National Art Museum of the Republic of Belarus, the Museum of Modern Fine Art
