Meissen Böttger Stoneware, Commemorative Medal ”Capture of Crete” 1941 - Böttger stoneware, with a green glazed rim, in the original case. A medal in memory of the airborne battle for Crete. The obverse features the inscription ”EINNAHME VON KRETA 20.MAI - 1.JUNI 1941” (Capture of Crete May 20 - June 1, 1941) above the island of Crete, flanked by the swastika. The reverse shows a detailed depiction of the airborne operation with Ju 52 transport planes and numerous paratroopers deploying, surrounded by the inscription ”SIEG DER FALLSCHIRMJÄGER-LUFTLANDETRUPPEN UND FLIEGER” (Victory of the Paratrooper-Air Landing Troops and Airmen). The medal is in its original red presentation case, very good age-appropriate condition, D. 50 mm, Case 8.5 x 8.5 x 1.7 cm (WxDxH). The Battle of Crete in May 1941 was the first major airborne operation in military history and a strategic, albeit extremely costly, victory for the German paratroopers. This medal was not an official military award but a privately produced commemorative piece that could be purchased by participants of the battle as a memento. It is an impressive historical document of this famous military operation. Revers eine detailreiche Darstellung der Luftlandeoperation mit Ju-52-Transportflugzeugen und zahlreichen Fallschirmjägern im Sprung, umgeben von der Inschrift „SIEG DER FALLSCHIRMJÄGER-LUFTLANDETRUPPEN UND FLIEGER“. Die Medaille im originalen, roten Verleihungsetui, altersgemäß sehr guter Zustand, D. 50 mm, Etui 8,5 x 8,5 x 1,7 cm (BxTxH) Die Schlacht um Kreta im Mai 1941 war die erste große Luftlandeoperation der Militärgeschichte ”Operation Merkur” und ein strategischer, wenn auch extrem verlustreicher Sieg für die deutschen Fallschirmjäger. Diese Medaille war keine offizielle militärische Auszeichnung, sondern eine privat hergestellte Gedenkprägung, die von den Teilnehmern der Schlacht als Erinnerungsstück erworben werden konnte. Sie ist ein eindrucksvolles zeithistorisches Dokument dieser berühmten Militäroperation.
