Brunswick Sword Knot for Sabre or Sword with Woven Tassel and Carrying Strap, 19th Century - Metal thread, wool, textile band. A sword knot for an edged weapon (sabre or sword) from the Duchy of Brunswick. The carrying strap is woven from metal thread in gold and blue tones and displays the characteristic striped pattern. At the lower end there is a braided, spherical tassel with fine basket weave and a blue wool core. The transition from band to tassel is worked with a woven slider. Good age-appropriate worn condition with patina from use, L. 48 cm, tassel D. 3 cm. The sword knot (Portepee) was a textile pendant on the hilt of an edged weapon and served as a rank insignia. In the Duchy of Brunswick, officers and senior non-commissioned officers carried specific versions in the state colours of blue and gold. The fine wire-wrapped work of the tassel and band indicates a quality officer's variant. The sword knot was looped through the guard of the sabre or sword and placed around the wrist to secure the weapon whilst riding or in combat. Ein Portepee für eine Blankwaffe (Säbel oder Degen) aus dem Herzogtum Braunschweig. Das Tragband ist aus gewebtem Metallfaden in Gold- und Blautönen gefertigt und zeigt die typische Streifenmusterung. Am unteren Ende befindet sich eine geflochtene, kugelförmige Quaste mit feiner Korbflechtung und einem blauen Wollkern. Der Übergang vom Band zur Quaste ist mit einem gewebten Schieber gearbeitet. Guter altersgemäß getragener Zustand mit Gebrauchspatina, L. 48 cm, Quaste D. 3 cm. Das Portepee (auch Faustriemen) war ein textiler Anhänger am Griff einer Blankwaffe und diente als Rangabzeichen. Im Herzogtum Braunschweig trugen Offiziere und Unteroffiziere mit Portepee (Feldwebel) spezifische Ausführungen in den Landesfarben Blau und Gold. Die feine Metallgespinstarbeit der Quaste und des Bandes deutet auf eine qualitätvolle Offizierausführung hin. Das Portepee wurde durch die Parierstange des Säbels oder Degens geschlungen und um das Handgelenk gelegt, um die Waffe beim Reiten oder im Gefecht zu sichern.
