Churin and K°” / Amur.” History of the Trading House: Ilya Yakovlevich Churin (1833-1901) was an entrepreneur and philanthropist, founder of one of the largest trade and industrial enterprises in the Far East of the Russian Empire. Founded in 1867 in Vladivostok, the Trading House ”Churin and K°” by the beginning of the 20th century included: shops in Khabarovsk, Blagoveshchensk, Nikolsk-Ussuriysk, Manchuria, China and Korea; warehouses, tea factories, its own confectionery and a network of suppliers; active participation in trade with China, especially in the field of tea import, leather and textile business. ”Churin and K°” became a symbol of successful Russian trade in the Asian direction, as well as a kind of high-quality brand. Symbols images on the box: Front side: ”I.Ya. Churin and Co. Store in Blagoveshchensk” Depicts a luxurious building of the branch of the trading house - an important symbol of the prestige, stability and architectural influence of the company in regional centers. The illustration emphasizes the scale of the network and the rootedness of the brand. Side with the inscription ”Golds riding dogs” A scene with the indigenous inhabitants of the Amur region (Golds is an ethnonym for the Nanai) riding in a dog sled across a snowy landscape. Symbolizes the connection of the brand with local ethnography, emphasizes the authenticity of the Far Eastern origin of the products. Side with the inscription ”Port in Vladivostok” A harbor filled with steamships, docks and warehouses - a direct hint at the export-import power of Churin as an intermediary between the East and Russia. Vladivostok was the logistics center and headquarters of the company. Side with the inscription ”Manguns” Probably depicts the transportation or extraction of tea in the Chinese outback (option - ”Manchuria” or a local settlement). The plot with boats on the river indicates the supply routes and the nature of trade in the border areas. The product is decorated with a lush ornament with gilded elements, typical of ”gift” or ”premium” class packaging. Lithography on tin was used, which was a technologically progressive method of the late 19th - early 20th centuries. The color scheme emphasizes the aesthetic sophistication and orientalism of the images. There are scuffs, rust and losses in the corners, but the lithography is legible. The lid fits tightly, the structure is preserved. An excellent exhibit for collections related to the history of trade, packaging, the Russian East and pre-revolutionary design.
