Patina, traces of use - An example of Soviet post-war decorative and applied art is the ”Russian Patterns” glass holder, made of tombac with gilding and decorated with cloisonné enamel (cloisonné). The decorative belt is a stylized motif in the spirit of Russian folk ornaments, with floral and geometric elements made in five colors of enamel. Each element of the ornament is outlined with thin partitions, giving the pattern expressiveness and artistic graphic quality. The rim of the glass holder and the handle have geometric decor, emphasizing the rhythm of the composition. Such glass holders were produced at Leningrad jewelry or art factories in the 1950s, during the period when the traditions of artistic crafts, including work with hot enamel, were reviving in the USSR. Tombac (a copper-zinc alloy with a high copper content) provided strength and plasticity of the form, and gilding gave the product a noble appearance. The use of cloisonné enamel, despite its labor intensity, demonstrates an artistic approach to a mass-produced decorative item.
