Rurik Vasilyevich Tushkin (1924–2006). The Reader. 1985. - Oil on fibreboard. 66.5 × 45.5 cm. Rurik Vasilyevich Tushkin (1924–2006) was a Russian painter, graphic artist, and nonconformist artist. He was a member of the Union of Artists of Russia. A veteran of the Second World War, Tushkin served in the Northern Fleet before being transferred to the Russian Far East in 1944. His life experience, shaped by both wartime service and the unique cultural environment of Vladivostok, would later inform the independent spirit of his artistic practice. During the 1960s, he studied painting at the People's University of Culture in Vladivostok. From 1988, he was a member of the creative association “Vladivostok”, which brought together artists seeking new forms of artistic expression beyond the conventions of official Soviet art. Tushkin developed a highly distinctive and individual painterly language, characterized by an exceptional diversity of compositional, chromatic, and plastic solutions. Working outside established stylistic frameworks, he continuously experimented with form, colour, and texture, creating works that stand apart within the context of Far Eastern Russian art. His paintings reveal a powerful personal vision, combining expressive freedom with a deep engagement with the emotional and intellectual dimensions of human experience.
