Yuri Ivanovich Volkov (1941–2017) was a distinguished Russian painter and graphic artist, awarded the title of Honoured Artist of the Russian Federation. A versatile master, he worked across portraiture, landscape, still life, and thematic painting. Volkov graduated from the Vladivostok Art College in 1962 and from the Far Eastern Institute of Arts in 1967. In the same year, he became a member of the Primorye branch of the Union of Artists of the USSR. He was a member of the creative association “Artists in the Kuril Islands” (the renowned Shikotan Group) and is regarded as one of the leading representatives of Primorye art in the second half of the twentieth century. The Kuril Islands became one of the artist’s principal sources of inspiration. His landscapes are distinguished by their powerful sense of authenticity and direct observation, capturing the unique atmosphere of the Russian Far East. Characterized by dramatic lighting, bold colour contrasts, and dynamic compositional viewpoints, Volkov’s works convey both the grandeur of nature and the emotional intensity of personal experience. In paintings such as Kunashir.
