Dominick and Haff Japonisme Thousand Butterflies Mixed Metal Lidded Jar. A Dominick and Haff Japonisme lidded jar featuring the Thousand Butterflies pattern. This square-form container is designed with bulbous, rounded sides that taper toward a flat base. The exterior is densely decorated in high relief with a motif of numerous butterflies in varying sizes. The piece is crafted from a copper-based alloy with a dark, patinated finish, while the interior and base show a silver-colored surface. A maker mark consisting of a stylized character within a lozenge is incised on the underside. The lid is decorated with matching relief work and is topped with a small, circular finial. This style is representative of the late 19th-century Aesthetic Movement.
