Bidspirit auction | A pair of large hand-carved
A pair of large hand-carved architectural finials, likely fashioned from sandstone or limestone. Each piece features a prominent ovoid or acorn-shaped terminal surmounting a robust square base. The bases exhibit a rusticated, tool-marked finish, providing a textural contrast to the smoother, rounded tops. These elements are characteristic of traditional estate or garden masonry, intended for use on gate piers, wall terminals, or balustrades. The stone displays a rich, natural patina developed through prolonged outdoor exposure, including significant white lichen colonies and dark biological oxidation. While no maker's marks are present, the craftsmanship suggests a 19th origin in the classical tradition. Dimensions: 66cms high, 47cms wide. Collection only. From Worsley, Manchester.
