Bidspirit auction | A late Victorian cast iron
A late Victorian cast iron still bank depicting a caricature of Paul Kruger, President of the South African Republic, based on the satirical illustrations of Sir Francis Carruthers Gould for the Westminster Gazette. The front of the top hat features the raised inscription TRANSVAAL MONEY BOX. The reverse bears the raised lettering BY PERMISSION OF THE PROPRIETORS OF WESTMINSTER GAZETTE across the shoulder area. The bank is constructed from two cast halves joined by a single flat-head screw located on the lower reverse. A coin slot is integrated into the flat crown of the top hat.
