Bidspirit auction | A late Victorian English twin-handled

A late Victorian English twin-handled earthenware jardiniere or cachepot of bulbous, footed form, attributed to T Rathbone and Co of Tunstall. The vessel features heavy Rococo-revival moulding, including shell-like scrolls, floral-motif handles, and a multi-scalloped rim. It is decorated with an underglaze flow blue floral transfer pattern, characterised by the intentional blurred diffusion of the cobalt blue glaze into the white ground. The base is marked with the hand-painted pattern number 1255 and a small circle in gold, situated next to a smudged and illegible blue underglaze factory backstamp.
