A handwritten Italian notebook, in Hebrew and Italian. Catalog of Hebrew manuscripts of the library of the Jewish community in Mantova by the Chief rabbi Mordechai Mortara, Livorno, 1878. The notebook contains 84 handwritten entries, with an Italian description for the most part, and Hebrew additions, of the manuscripts. Most of the entries appear as manuscripts in the National Library. For example, Euclid's Elements (178385). The Astrolabe Book (178411). Rabbi Mordechai Mortara (1817-1891) was born in Viadana near Mantova (Mantua) to his father Rabbi Yosef. He moved to Mantova and was one of the first disciples of Rabbi Shmuel David Luzzatto. In 1736 he was ordained as a rabbi. In 1841, Rabbi Ya'akov Kazis, the rabbi of Mantova, died and a year later, Rabbi Mortara was chosen to replace him. He had an argument with the Sages of Italy about the abolition of the second day of the Holy Days (Yom Tov Sheni shel Galuyot) and was of the opinion that it should not be abolished. He authored many compilations of sermons – biblical and Jewish thought studies and translated prayer books into Italian. Was known for his book ”Mazkeret Chachmei Italia”. Among his books: ”Pe'er HaAdam”, ”Ruach Yisrael”. He owned a large library which contained many manuscripts. After his death, the library was sold to the well-known scholar David Kaufman. Notebook 80 leaves. 49 leaves written on both their sides. 21x15cm. The (non-written) back part of the notebook is detached. Original binding. A small tear to the front binding. Good overall condition.
