Many Glosses Handwritten by Rabbi Shaul Katzenellenbogen Av Beit Din of Shilel – around Shulchan Aruch Choshen Mishpat – Lemberg, 1864 - A large volume of the Shulchan Aruch, Choshen Mishpat, second section. Section B: Siman 133-426. With all the commentators that appear on the leaf. Lemberg, 1864. Appearing on the title page of the book is the handwritten signature of Rabbi ”Shaul Rabbi Shaul Katzenellenbogen of Shilel”. Throughout the book, dozens of glosses handwritten by him, some of them long and containing a halachic discussion, others are scholarly and contain references. Rabbi Shaul Katzenellenbogen (1841-1919, Otzar Harabbanim 17993), one of the greatest rabbis and Moreh Hora'ah of his generation. Rabbi and Av Beit Din of Shilel – the region of Kovno in Lithuania, where he responded to questions in all fields of the halacha. In his youth, he studied with Rabbi Yechiel Heller Av Beit Din of Plungian and Sovlak and author of the ”Amudei Or” Responsa, whom he calls ”My teacher and rabbi”. In 1890, he was chosen as the rabbi of Shilel where he also served as a Dayan until circa 1915. His book the Magen Shaul Responsa was published recently by Mifal Torat Chachmei Lita (Jeusalem Institute, 1989) containing responsa from the years 1879-1914, approximately 180 responses on the four parts of the Shulchan Aruch in which he corresponds with the mosr prominent rabbis, among them Rabbi Yitzchak Elchanan Spektor of Kovno, Rabbi Yechiel Michl Halevi Epstein author of Aruch HaShulchan, Rabbi Alexnader Moshe Lapidot, the Aderet, Rabbi Moshe Ruzin and more. In this book, Rabbi Katzenellenbogen often refers to his glosses on the Shulchan Aruch, glosses which were unknown – before us is a discovery of a volume of Shulchan Aruch Choshen Mishpat with his glosses!
