Yavin Shemu'ah – Livorno, 1792 – Dozens of Handwritten Glosses Signed by Rabbi Moshe Sab'on of Oran - The book Yavin Shemu'ah, a composition on the book Halichot Olam and Klalei HaGemara by Rabbi Yosef Karo. By Rabbi Shlomo Algazi, one of the greatest rabbis of Turkey and Jerusalem. With Mafte'ach Klalei HaGemara by Rabbi Malachi Hacohen author of the book Yad Malachi. Livorno, 1792. Printed by Rabbi Ya'akov Nunes Vais and Rabbi Raphael Mildola. The book contains glosses and comments by Rabbi Malachi Hacohen and corrections and references by the proofreader and printer David Lopes. Throughout the book approximately 60 comments and novella handwritten by Rabbi Moshe Sab'on, most of them signed ”Moshe”, ”Moshe Sab'on” (Hebrew). In addition, short glosses, textual corrections and various inscriptions at the end of the book. On the title page, an inscription ”I the young … Nissim Karsenti…” (Hebrew) – curly signature. Rabbi Moshe Sab'on (1806-1888) one of the sages of Oran [Algiers]. A Torah scholar and proficient in kabbalah. In his youth, he studied with his father Rabbi Moshe Knafo. He owned a very large library with more than 5000 books. Rabbi Moshe argued against the book ”Zevachim Shelamim” by Rabbi Avraham Ankava, claiming no one should criticize the Rishonim. Rabbi Moshe Sab'on wrote a halachic ruling against the two commentaries of Rabbi Ankava claiming they were faulty and erroneous and cannot be relied on and stated that it is forbidden to bring the book into one's house. Subsequently, the book was torn, meat was wrapped with its leaves and cigarettes were made from its pages. Rabbi Avraham wrote a booklet in response that was printed in his book ”Taharat Hakesef” (Livorno, 1860). The controversy regarding Zevachim Shelamim continued in North Africa for many years and the sages of Tunisia banned the book. 142 [should be 144] leaves. 29cm. Ancient worn binding. Wormholes.
