William Powell Frith ”Hearts are Trumps” Painting - William Powell Frith (English, 1819-1909). Small oil on board painting titled ”Hearts are Trumps” depicting a group of cardplayers, 1875. Signed and dated along the lower right. Possibly relating to Frith's work on the theme of Oliver Goldsmith's novel ”The Vicar of Wakefield.” Sight; height: 5 1/2 in x width: 6 3/4 in. Framed; height: 11 1/4 in x width: 12 3/4 in x depth: 1 1/2 in. Condition: The colors are bold and deep and the surface appears stable. There are no visible losses or signs of restoration. Light craquelure throughout, particularly along the lower right corner, and faint, light accrections. The board is slightly bowed. Housed within a wood frame, not under glass or plexiglass.Some wear to the frame. Not inspected out of frame.
