Guy Shaw ”Tiger in Bamboo” Ojime Carving 1995 - Guy Shaw (British, 1951-2003). Carved mammoth tusk ojime titled ”Tiger in Bamboo, ” completed at 10 PM on November 29, 1995. With an amber inlaid eye with the eyes-follow technique. With a tomobako with wood burned signature. As commented by Shaw: ”It is actually a bit of a rarity as it is only the third ojime I have every made. I like it for its immediate impact which came about because I wanted to make something different from the usual representation of tigers in ojime. So I started thinking about may be just concentrating on one particular aspect and came up with its most salient feature - an eye with a kind of dispassionate and calculating look about it and trying to put in the idea of maybe this is the last thing you see! The eye is looking slightly down at you although the 'eyes follow' technique is used too. One the reverse is a bamboo forest scene, once again seen from slightly below the normal eye line, giving I hope a slightly uneasy feeling.” Provenance: Commission from Guy Shaw, December 6, 1995.
