Rudolf Schlichter ”Tod des Anarchisten Moro” WC - Rudolf Schlichter (German, 1890-1955). Watercolor on paper painting titled ”Tod des Anarchisten Moro (Death of the Anarchist Moro), ” ca. 1920, likely after 1923. Provenance: Villa Grisebach Auctioneers; From the Estate of Gary Fink. ` Lot Essay: Schlichter's early academic training consisted of studies in Stuttgart and Karlsruhe. However, after moving to Berlin in 1919 and joining the Communist party, he renounced this training following the example of George Grosz. His art during this time dealt extensively with the subject of human laughter, death, and murder, influenced heavily by the 1918 Revolution and the works of the ”November Grupe.” While the early 1920s saw his works rendered in a hard-edged, quasi-mechanical figural style, by 1923 he shifted to more naturalistic portrayals of his subjects. In this work the subject of the title, the 'anarchist Moro', may refer to Cesar Moro, a pen name of Peruvian poet Alfredo Quispez Asin. During Moro's early years he lived and worked in Paris, associating with the Dada group and by association, Schlichter. However, the figure depicted in the painting does not appear to be a representation of a real person. The 'anarchist Moro' here is a representation the working class proletariat struck down by invasive government forces. The red dress of the woman, who reaches for a pistol, symbolizes the obsession with power and political domination that is so often the subject of Schlichter's works. Gary C.
