Large diptych of ortho film, silicone, wood, and pipe clamps titled ”Half Concave Athenian Horse and Neck, ” ca. 1989. Provenance: Stefan Stux Gallery, 2000; From the Estate of Gary Fink. Lot Essay: Doug and Mike Starn (born 1961) are identical twin American artists known for their boundary-defying work that merges photography, sculpture, architecture, painting, video, and installation. Their art explores interconnection, interdependence, chaos, and organic systems, often using light as a metaphor for creativity and life. They rose to prominence after the 1987 Whitney Biennial and were represented by Leo Castelli until his death. The Starns have exhibited widely, published multiple monographs, and their work is held in major collections. They’ve received several honors, including NEA grants and the Infinity Award from the International Center for Photography. Gary C. Fink was a collector with both a lighthearted sense of humor and a serious commitment to art. Through the Museum Louvre It or Leave It, he offered Minnesotans an offbeat, thought-provoking experience; through MIA gifts, he broadened institutional collections; and through his scholarship, he continues to enable the next generation of artists. A Renaissance soul in the heart of Minnesota’s art community, Gary C. Fink was more than an astute collector - he was a spirited patron whose unconventional vision left an indelible mark on the creative landscape.
