Lot Essay: Jean Lambert-Rucki (1888-1967) was a prolific and versatile Polish-born artist whose work spanned several major 20th-century art movements, including Cubism, Surrealism, Art Deco, and Modern Religious Art. After moving to Paris in 1911, he immersed himself in the avant-garde art scene of Montparnasse, befriending artists such as Amedeo Modigliani, Chaim Soutine, and Moise Kisling, and studying at the Academie Colarossi. Lambert-Rucki gained early recognition after exhibiting at the Salon d'Automne in 1913, and post-World War I, he became actively involved in the Section d'Or, a group aiming to revive Cubism with support from major figures like Fernand Leger, Albert Gleizes, and Georges Braque. Throughout the 1920s and beyond, Lambert-Rucki’s work bridged fine art and decorative arts. He collaborated with prominent designers like Jean Dunand and Emile-Jacques Ruhlmann, contributing to the 1925 International Exposition of Modern Industrial and Decorative Arts, a defining moment in the Art Deco movement. In 1931, he became a founding member of l’Union des Artistes Modernes (UAM), a collective that emphasized functional, modernist aesthetics over ornamental design, working alongside visionaries such as Le Corbusier and Robert Mallet-Stevens. A pioneer of Modern Religious Art in the 1930s, he also created works for churches and public spaces. Though he remained a private figure, Lambert-Rucki exhibited internationally and was deeply committed to innovation and artistic independence throughout his career. Gary C.
