Lot Essay: Louis Cane (French, 1943-2024) was a French artist associated with the Supports/Surfaces movement, which sought to challenge conventional painting by prioritizing materiality and process over traditional composition. Trained at the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Arts Decoratifs (National School of Decorative Arts) in Paris, Cane’s early works deconstructed the canvas itself, exploring its physical boundaries and structure. This approach aligned with a broader trend in French art that blurred the lines between painting and sculpture. In addition to his work on canvas, Cane produced a significant body of bronze sculptures, often abstract in form. These works, like his paintings, explored the tension between material and space, transforming everyday objects into art. In the 1980s, Cane shifted towards figuration, incorporating classical references while maintaining a modernist sensibility.
