Lot Essay: Sean Henry is a British sculptor known for his painted, polychrome human figures that merge ceramics and sculpture in innovative ways. Educated at Farnham School of Art and Bristol Polytechnic, he later served as a visiting artist at the University of California and became the first sculptor to win the Villiers David Prize in 1998. His work, which explores the tension between realism and psychological depth, has been described by art historian Tom Flynn as imbuing figures with powerful presence and themes of life and death. Henry’s major works include Walking Man (1998, London), Man with Potential Selves (2001, Newcastle), and Couple (2007, Northumberland), the UK’s first permanent offshore sculpture. His installations are found internationally, including in Oslo, Stockholm, Colchester, Michigan, and the North York Moors. In recent years, he has placed multiple works in his hometown of Woking, Surrey, such as Seated Man (2011) and The Wanderer (2013). Since his first solo show in London in 1988, Henry has exhibited widely across Europe, the USA, and beyond. His work has been the subject of monographs by Tom Flynn, including a 2011 publication tied to his exhibition Conflux at Salisbury Cathedral. In 2015, the National Portrait Gallery commissioned him to create a sculpture of Sir Tim Berners-Lee. Henry is represented by Osborne Samuel Gallery in London and Galleri Andersson Sandstrom in Sweden. Gary C.
