Lot Essay: Robert Kushner has often been considered a founder of the Pattern and Decoration movement. The Pattern and Decoration (P&D) art movement emerged in the United States in the mid-1970s as a response to the dominance of Minimalism and Conceptual art. It celebrated ornamental, decorative, and craft-based aesthetics often dismissed by the mainstream art world. Drawing from global traditions such as Islamic tilework, Japanese screens, American quilts, and feminist art practices, P&D artists embraced color, repetition, and intricate patterns. The movement challenged the hierarchy between ”high” and ”low” art, asserting the value of beauty, pleasure, and traditionally feminine forms of expression. Though it declined by the late 1980s, P&D has seen renewed interest for its bold critique of art world conventions and its inclusive, multicultural vision. Sight; height: 31 in x width: 35 in.
