19th c. Chinese Inlaid & Embroidered Silk Screen - Large Chinese mother-of-pearl inlaid floor screen with embroidered silk kesi (kosu) panels, 19th century. The central panel depicting a dynamic scene on cream ground abundant with avian forms, including a peacock perched atop a rock, its plumage rendered in exquisite detail, with herons and quail populating the foreground. Overhead, pheasants, hawks, egrets, and jays soar and settle on the branches of a blooming tree peony, signifying nobility and prosperity. A single moth flutters along the upper right quadrant while three goats or rams lie recumbent below. Three sides of the central composition are bordered by narrow brocade panels depicting animated dragons in pursuit of flaming pearls, executed in gilt thread. The panel bordering the lower edge of the central scene depicting koi fish, their sinuous forms symbolizing perseverance and abundance. Beneath, the lowest panel features a figural scene of sparring men bearing weapons and lanterns in confrontation. Bordered by inlaid shou character medallions, pearls, and bats, symbolizing longevity and auspicious fortune. Encircled by a secondary border densely patterned with blooming peonies. Resting on carved foo dog form feet. Height: 59 1/2 in x width: 34 in x depth: 16 in. Condition: To the silk, there are no visible tears. There are some small scattered dark areas of soiling to the dragon brocade border along the main screen. The silk is housed between plexiglassglass and has not been inspected out of frame. To the wooden screen, there is some seperation to the joints. Some losses to the mother-of-pearl inlay throughout. There are some small scuffs and chips, primarily along the lower edges. The lowest panel rests askew. Some wear to the feet.
