19th c. Chinese Qing Embroidered Silk Waitao Robe - Chinese embroidered silk waitao (overcoat) or robe, Qing dynasty, late 19th century. Depicting finely embroidered roundels, branches bearing fruit, and blooming floral motifs amid butterflies and auspicious shou symbols. The roundels further decorated with three birds each: a peacock, crane, and phoenix. Executed with vibrantly dyed threads against a black and cream ground. Length: 38 in x should-to-shoulder: 26 in x chest: 32 in x sleeve: 15 in. Condition: There are scattered areas of soiling throughout. There is shattering to the silk throughout, especially along the back; there is an area along the rear lower left panel which has been reinforced with ribbon due to shattering. There are no odors. There is some possible evidence of past insect activity.
