Wysocki, Jr. was an American painter celebrated for his nostalgic depictions of early American life, particularly scenes from the horse-and-buggy era. Born in Detroit to Polish-American parents, he studied art at Cass Technical High School and later at the ArtCenter College of Design in Los Angeles under the G.I. Bill after serving in the Army in West Germany. Initially a commercial illustrator, Wysocki transitioned into fine art after marrying fellow artist Elizabeth Lawrence in 1960. Their travels to New England inspired his distinctive “Americana” style - rural towns, quaint barns, fall foliage, and cozy domestic scenes that embodied an idealized past. His art gained immense popularity through reproductions on calendars, puzzles, greeting cards, and collectible merchandise. By the 1980s, Wysocki’s artwork had become a household favorite, generating millions in annual sales and leading to features in major publications like People magazine. Admired by President Ronald Reagan, who displayed his work in both the California governor’s office and the White House, Wysocki’s patriotic charm resonated with mainstream America. His paintings were later exhibited at the Nixon Library, and two books - An American Celebration (1985) and Heartland (1994) - further cemented his legacy.
