Lrg Jacob Mishori ”The Shaving Off” Painting 1983 - Jacob Mishori (Israeli, b. 1952). Acrylic on canvas painting titled ”The Shaving Off, ” 1983. Signed along the lower right; further signed, dated, and inscribed along the verso ”Gessel.” From ”The Leiden Suite, ” 1983. Provenance: The Joshua Gessel Collection, Tel-Aviv; Dolly J. Fiterman Collection 1985, Minneapolis; Acquired by the present owner from the above. ”The Leiden Suite” is a collective of large-scale acrylics on canvas that were painted during the summer of 1984 in Leiden, Holland. Mishori is the subject of his paintings, in an emotional and volatile series of self-portraits set against street scenes of Leiden. These cityscapes become an extension of his self, as the artist exposes his inner-being in a variety of modes. Flames that emerge from his head also engulf the city behind him, with his face portrayed in the same colors as the flames and buildings. In one painting, he is aggressive, and in another he is withdrawn. The works are characterized by bright, sometimes fluorescent, primary colors. The subject matter, bold color, and size of these paintings remind the viewer that art functions in many ways.
