Attr. Rhead Vance-Avon ”King of the Jungle” Plaque - Attributed to Frederick Hurton Rhead (American, 1880-1942) for Vance-Avon Faience, Wheeling, West Virginia. Art pottery plaque, possibly titled ”King of the Jungle, ” ca. 1902-1903. Depicting a large and imposing lion surrounded by a band of arboreal tree motifs along the circumference of the work. Diameter: 17 in. Condition: There are no large losses to the ceramic; there are some losses to the glaze along the rim. There are several signs of restoration and large repaired breaks that fluoresce under UV light. Crazing to the glaze throughout. Some scratches, varying from light to deep, along the surface. Light wear to the underside.
