18th/19th c. Chinese Carved Wood Guanyin - Large Chinese carved wooden statue depicting a guanyin figure or boddhisattva of mercy and compassion, ca. late 18th to early 19th century. With red pigment, gesso, fabric, and gilt. The verso with two compartments concealed by fabric and pigment. The figure stands atop a carved base. Provenance: Private Minnesota Collection. Height: 41 in x width: 12 in x depth: 8 1/2 in. Condition: Wear throughout commensurate with age and material. There are areas of flaking, scuffs, and losses to the polychrome pigment throughout. Some splits and cracks forming in the wood. There is a repaired break to the upper third of the head and left hand. There are two large square areas with canvas or fabric that have been painted over along the verso, possibly repairs. Heavy wear including chips and large losses to the base.
