12 Spode ”Tree of Life” Porcelain Serving Dishes - Spode, England. Group of twelve pattern 282 ”Tree of Life” porcelain serving dishes, ca. 1813. Marked with an imitation Chinese double ring mark and inscribed with pattern number in iron red. Including: a lidded soup tureen with undertray; two lidded sauce tureens; two lobed dessert plates; three square dishes; four quatrefoil dishes. Provenance: Rochelle Thomas of Palm Beach - Fine Antique Porcelain, Palm Beach, FL, April 20, 1981; The Distinguished Collection of Leo & Doris Hodroff. This pattern was first introduced by Josiah Spode II ca. 1801 and depicts a central gnarled tree with blossoms and bands of decoration. It is designed after Japanese Kakiemon designs. The pattern proved so popular that it was reproduced in 1813 as pattern 2038. (Lidded Vessels) Heigh ranges from 4 3/4 in to 9 in; width ranges from 6 in to 15 in; depth ranges from 4 in to 9 in. (Trays) Height ranges from 1 1/2 in to 2 in; width ranges from 8 in to 15 in; depth ranges from 8 in to 10 3/4 in. Condition: To one of the smaller lidded vessels, there is a repaired break spanning the length of the lid, signs of restoration to the apex of the finial, and a small hairline crack along the rim of the dish. To the other smaller lidded vessel, there are signs of restoration to the finial. To the larger tureen, there is a repaired break along the interior, as well as toned signs of restoration throughout that fluoresce under UV light, especially along the applied hands, the upper third of the vessel, and the foot. To the tureen tray, there are two large repaired breaks spanning the width of the tray. There are signs of restoration to the footrim of one round plate. There are two small accretions along the interior of one of the lobed trays. One of the lobed trays with a repaired crack along the foot and two additional small hairline cracks. Wear and some losses to the gilt and pigment throughout. Light wear along the surfaces, commensurate with use. Several pieces with few minute chips along the footrims.
