Pr Spode ”Tree of Life” Porcelain Meat Trays 20” - Spode, England. Pair of pattern 282 ”Tree of Life” porcelain meat trays, ca. 1813. Each marked with an imitation Chinese double ring mark and inscribed with pattern number in iron red. Provenance: Rochelle Thomas of Palm Beach - Fine Antique Porcelain, Palm Beach, FL, April 20, 1981; The Distinguished Collection of Leo & Doris Hodroff. This pattern was first introduced by Josiah Spode II ca. 1801 and depicts a central gnarled tree with blossoms and bands of decoration. It is designed after Japanese Kakiemon designs. The pattern proved so popular that it was reproduced in 1813 as pattern 2038. (Each) Height: 2 1/2 in x width: 20 1/4 in x depth: 15 1/2 in. Condition: There are possible signs of restoration and repair to each of the applied feet along both trays. One tray with additional signs of restoration that fluoresce under UV light along the rim. There is a small deep and toned scratch along the lower left region of one tray. To to other tray, there is a deep scratch along the underside of the rim, along the lower right quadrant of the tray. Wear and some losses to the gilt and pigment throughout. Light wear along the surfaces, commensurate with use.
