3 Spode ”Tree of Life” Lobed Porcelain Trays - Spode, England. Group of three pattern 282 ”Tree of Life” porcelain serving trays, ca. 1813. Each marked with an imitation Chinese double ring mark and inscribed with pattern number in iron red; two larger trays with maker mark. Provenance: Rochelle Thomas of Palm Beach - Fine Antique Porcelain, Palm Beach, FL, April 20, 1981; The Distinguished Collection of Leo & Doris Hodroff. This pattern was first introduced by Josiah Spode II ca. 1801 and depicts a central gnarled tree with blossoms and bands of decoration. It is designed after Japanese Kakiemon designs. The pattern proved so popular that it was reproduced in 1813 as pattern 2038. Height ranges from 2 in to 3 in; width ranges from 11 1/2 in to 14 in; depth ranges from 16 in to 17 3/4 in. Condition: There is a hairline crack extending approximately three inches downward from the rim of the medium tray. There are accretions along the upper right quadrant of the medium tray, and along the footrims of each tray. Wear and some losses to the gilt and pigment throughout. Light wear along the surfaces, commensurate with use.
