Set 24 Spode ”Tree of Life” Lunch Plates - Spode, England. Group of 24 pattern 282 ”Tree of Life” porcelain lunch plates, ca. 1813. Marked with an imitation Chinese double ring mark and inscribed with pattern number in iron red. Provenance: Rochelle Thomas of Palm Beach - Fine Antique Porcelain, Palm Beach, FL, April 20, 1981; The Distinguished Collection of Leo & Doris Hodroff. This pattern was first introduced by Josiah Spode II ca. 1801 and depicts a central gnarled tree with blossoms and bands of decoration. It is designed after Japanese Kakiemon designs. The pattern proved so popular that it was reproduced in 1813 as pattern 2038. (Each) Diameter: 9 1/2 in. Condition: There are twelve plates with signs of restoration that fluoresce under UV light, primarily along the footrims and undersides. There is one plate with a repaired break to the rims, measuring approximately 1/2 inch in size; there are losses to the glaze and small chips along the permimeter of the repair as well as additional signs of restoration that fluoresce under UV light along the underside, primarily along the footrim of this plate. There are two plates with hairline cracks; one plate with deeply toned hairline crack along the foot and underside, the second plate with hairline crack along the rim with signs of repair and restoration to the crack, visible from the underside of the plate. One plate with light accretions along the border. Each plate with light fleabite to small chips along the footrims. Wear to the gilt and pigment throughout. Light surface wear throughout, commensurate with use.
