Set 16 Spode ”Tree of Life” Coffee Cups & Bowls - Spode, England. Group of 16 pattern 282 ”Tree of Life” porcelain demitasse or coffee cups with saucers, ca. 1813. Thirty-two pieces total. Marked with an imitation Chinese double ring mark and inscribed with pattern number in iron red. Provenance: Rochelle Thomas of Palm Beach - Fine Antique Porcelain, Palm Beach, FL, April 20, 1981; The Distinguished Collection of Leo & Doris Hodroff. This pattern was first introduced by Josiah Spode II ca. 1801 and depicts a central gnarled tree with blossoms and bands of decoration. It is designed after Japanese Kakiemon designs. The pattern proved so popular that it was reproduced in 1813 as pattern 2038. (Demitasse cups, each) Height: 2 1/2 in x width: 3 1/2 in x diameter: 2 3/4 in. (Bowls, each) Height: 1 1/4 in x diameter: 5 1/2 in. Condition: Crazing throughout the glaze. The interiors of six cups and three bowls are unevenly and deeply toned. Three cups with minute signs of restoration that fluoresce under UV light along the handles, and one cup with two large repaired breaks to the handles. Three cups with small hairline cracks, ranging from 1/4 in to 1 inch in length, extending downward from the rim. There are two bowls with hairline cracks along the underside; one bowl with small hairline crack, measuring approximately 1/4 inch, extending downward from the rim. One bowl with large crack extending downward from the rim to the footrim. Accretions throughout the footrims. Wear and some losses to the gilt and pigment throughout. Light wear along the surfaces, commensurate with use.
