Set 2 Spode Imari 3071 Serving Trays - Spode, England. Set of two pattern 3071 ”Imari” porcelain oval serving trays, ca 1820. The larger tray with maker mark and pattern number in iron red. The smaller tray unmarked. Each decorated with the pattern of flowering blossoms in the center with pierced scroll- and shell-form handles. Provenance: The Art Exchange Inc., New York, 1970; The Distinguished Collection of Leo & Doris Hodroff. The Spode Imari pattern was designed to meet the high demand of English consumers who desired the Japanese originals. However, the East India company was barred from importing these goods in 1799. In response, English factories began designing their own iterations to meet the demands of those who sought replacements or for those who simply sought to own the desirable pattern. Spode was among the first to create this pattern ca. 1805. (Smaller) length: 9 1/2 in x width: 7 1/2 in. (Larger) length: 16 1/2 in x width: 13 in. Condition: There are no breaks or signs of restoration. To the smaller platter there are small to fleabite-sized chips to the footrim. Very light surface wear and losses to the gilt to both trays.
