Spode Imari 3071 Sauce Tureen w/ Tray - Spode, England. Pattern 3071 ”Imari” porcelain sauce tureen with undertray and lid, ca. 1820. Tureen and tray each marked in iron red with maker mark and pattern number. Provenance: The Art Exchange Inc., New York, 1970; The Distinguished Collection of Leo & Doris Hodroff. The Spode Imari pattern was designed to meet the high demand of English consumers who desired the Japanese originals. However, the East India company was barred from importing these goods in 1799. In response, English factories began designing their own iterations to meet the demands of those who sought replacements or for those who simply sought to own the desirable pattern. Spode was among the first to create this pattern ca. 1805. (Tureen) height: 5 1/4 in x width: 7 in x depth: 4 1/4 in. (Undertray) length: 8 1/4 in x width: 5 3/4 in. Condition: There are no cracks, chips, or restorations. Light surface wear throughout. Some small losses to the gilt along the high points of the handles and extreme edges of the rims. Light accretions to the tureen.
