Set 12 Spode Imari 3071 Dinner Plates - Spode, England. Set of 12 pattern 3071 ”Imari” porcelain dinner plates, ca. 1820. All with maker mark and pattern number in iron red. Provenance: The Art Exchange Inc., New York, 1970; The Distinguished Collection of Leo & Doris Hodroff. The Spode Imari pattern was designed to meet the high demand of English consumers who desired the Japanese originals. However, the East India company was barred from importing these goods in 1799. In response, English factories began designing their own iterations to meet the demands of those who sought replacements or for those who simply sought to own the desirable pattern. Spode was among the first to create this pattern ca. 1805. (Each) diameter: 9 3/4 in. Condition: There are no cracks or restorations. Two plates with a small chip to the footrim. Light surface wear with some small losses to the gilt, primarily along the rims.
