Meissen Figure Emblematic of Asia & Africa ca 1760 - Meissen, Germany. Modelled by Friedrich Elias Meyer. Porcelain figural group emblematic of two continents, Asia and Africa, ca. 1760. Africa wearing an elephant helmet holding a piece of coral; Asia holding an urn of incense and a crescent moon with a turban beside him. Both figures seated atop a rocaille base. Blue crossed swords mark at the back. Provenance: Christie's, London, ”The Nyffeler Collection of German Porcelain, ” June 9, 1986, Lot 50; The Distinguished Collection of Leo & Doris Hodroff. Height: 9 in x width: 5 1/2 in x depth: 6 in. Condition: There are signs of restorations and repairs throughout that fluoresce under UV light. There are several repaired breaks and cracks where the ”Asia” figure has been re-attached to the base. The right hand of the ”Africa” figure shows signs of large repairs; there are repairs where this arm joins the ”Asia” figure. The coral in this hand has been repaired. There are signs of repair and resoration to the ”Africa” figure's left hand. Some small to moderately-sized chips along high points, particularly along the tusks, fingers, claws, and the lion's teeth. There is a large loss to the baton between the two figures. The crescent-form object in the ”Asia” figure's left hand has has been restored. Repairs to the orange cloth behind the ”Africa” figure. Some wear to the gilt and pigment, particularly to the torch held by the ”Asia” figure.
