Pr Louis XVI Giltwood Fauteuil Armchairs - Pair of French Louis XVI giltwood fauteuils or armchairs, ca. 1840. Each featuring an oval back with scrolling downswept arms, carved gadrooned frames, striped coral upholstery, and reeded tapered legs terminating in pointed feet. Provenance: South Audley Art Galleries Limited, London, 1972; The Distinguished Collection of Leo & Doris Hodroff. (Each) Height: 36 1/2 in x width: 23 3/4 in x depth: 18 in. Condition: The seats are structurally sound and stable. Wear to the upholstery, including a small tear along the left armrest of one chair. There are chips and losses, particularly to the gilt pigment, throughout, especially along high points and the extreme edges of the wooden frame. Light separation to the joints; a few small cracks along areas where the joints meet. A few small stains and areas of moisure exposure along the upholstery. Wear to the legs and feet, including scuffs and scratches.
