18th c. French Regence Carved Giltwood Mirror - French Regence carved giltwood overmantel mirror, ca. 1720. With associated cresting and later peripheral carvings. The arched cresting centered with carved shell decoration above a rectangular plate with allover scrolling. The floral-carved decoration flanked on either side by animal heads. The apron with carved mask decoration. Provenance: Gene Tyson Inc., New York, NY, January 26, 1988; The Distinguished Collection of Leo & Doris Hodroff. Height: 78 in x width: 43 in x depth: 4 in. Condition: To the central rectangular mirror, there are three cracks along the lower perimeter of the mirror. There are a few small chips and losses to the mirror, primarily along the extreme edges. There are scattered areas of desilvering to the mirror. To the upper arched element of the mirror, there are scattered losses to the mirror, particularly along the extreme edges of the mirror; there is a large loss to one of the rectangular mirror elements along the top crest. There is a small crack along the right side of the arched mirror. To the arched element, the mirror appears to be slightly askew within the carved structure; there is residual adhesive visible along the left upper side of the mirror. To each of the mirrors, there are light scratches and accretions. To the wooden frames, there are small to large chips and losses throughout, primarily along the extreme edges and to the carved elements. There are some breaks to the wood, particularly along the carved elements. There are scattered signs of repair, including visible signs of glue adhesive. There are cracks and splits forming in the wood, particularly along the carved elements. Wear to the gilt, including scattered losses throughout. There is some separation to the joints. To the verso wooden frame, there are drilled holes, boreholes, losses, and accretions.
