George Simson Continental Bonheur Du Jour Desk - George Simson, London. George III Sheraton maple and satinwood bonheur-du-jour secretary desk, ca. 1790. With two cupboard doors flanking a central open section and one long drawer, a rectangular base with a secretaire drawer opening to reveal a series of drawers and pigeonholes, and a tooled leather writing surface. Atop a drop front cabinet with square, tapered legs terminating in brass caps. With a paper label along the interior of one of the pigeonholes, and an additional partial paper label along the interior of the lower cabinet. Provenance: Arthur Ackermann & Son, Inc., New York, 1965; The Distinguished Collection of Leo & Doris Hodroff. Height: 46 1/2 in x width: 28 1/2 in x depth: 18 1/4 in. Condition: The desk wobbles. Light separation to the joints. The drawers open and close smoothly. There are vertical splits along each of the cabinet doors. There are additional splits forming along either side of the cabinet as well as a large horizontal split forming along the back and along the writing surface. Some warping to the wood panel comprising the upper surface of the cabinets. There are several scratches, some deep, along the surfaces and in particular along the writing surface. The locks function well. There is a large area of skimming to the lining of the drawer. Tarnishing to the metal components. Light wear to the feet.
